Each manual contains a chapter that covers pretrip and post-trip inspections, and daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of vehicle components.

Maintenance Intervals Refer to Maintenance Intervals for Schedule I, Schedule II, and Schedule III to determine which maintenance interval(s) should be performed when your vehicle reaches the mileage or hours of operation listed in these tables. Maintenance Operations Groups 01 through 83 in this manual have an index at the beginning of each Group. The index lists the Title of Maintenance Operations and the maintenance Operation (MOP) Numbers for that Group. Follow the instructions under the MOP number to perform the required maintenance.Change synthetic lubricants at M5 only. Schedule II and Schedule III vehicles only. If equipped with an oil-coalescing desiccant cartridge, replace the cartridge once a year, regardless of mileage. Otherwise use the M5 maintenance interval. Replace the HVAC air filter at the recommended interval or every six months.Initial Maintenance (IM) Operations Maintenance Operation No.If equipped with an oil-coalescing desiccant cartridge, replace the cartridge once a year, regardless of mileage. M1 maintenance interval should be used as a general guideline; the actual frequency of filter element replacement will vary depending on cleanliness of the fuel station system.M2 Maintenance Operations Maintenance Operation No. Schedule II vehicles only.M3 Maintenance Operations Maintenance Operation No.M4 Maintenance Operations Maintenance Operation No.M5 Maintenance Operations Maintenance Operation No. MOP 00-12, M1 Lubrication and Fluid Level Check Maintenance Operation No. Maintenance Operation No. In compliance with the law, the Noise Emission Control Systems maintenance located in each applicable group within this manual, in conjunction with the vehicle workshop manual, provides these instructions to owners. Recommendations for Replacement Parts Replacement parts used for maintenance or repair of noise emission control systems should be genuine Freightliner parts.

All field service campaigns are distributed to dealers; customers receive notices that apply to their vehicles. I 2 Business Class M2 Maintenance Manual, May 2011 A proper maintenance program will also help to minimize downtime and safeguard warranties. To determine the correct maintenance intervals for your vehicle, you must first determine the type of service or conditions the vehicle will be operating in. Most vehicles operate in conditions that fall within one of the three schedules. Before placing your vehicle in service, determine whether Schedule I, II, or III applies to your vehicle. Schedules I-III Schedule I (severe service) applies to vehicles that travel up to 6000 miles ( kilometers) annually or that operate under severe conditions. Examples of Schedule I usage are: operation on extremely poor roads or where there is heavy dust accumulation constant exposure to extreme hot, cold, salt air, or other extreme climates frequent short-distance travel construction-site operation city operation such as fire truck and garbage truck.Examples of Schedule II usage are: operation primarily in cities and densely populated areas local transport with infrequent freeway travel high percentage of stop-and-go travel Schedule III (long-haul transport) is for vehicles that travel more than 60,000 miles ( kilometers) annually with minimal city or stop-and-go operation. Examples of Schedule III usage are: regional delivery that is mostly freeway miles interstate transport any road operation with high annual mileage Maintenance Schedules After determining the schedule appropriate to your vehicle, refer to the Maintenance Schedules to determine when to perform the Initial Maintenance (IM) and the frequency of performing subsequent maintenance intervals for each schedule.

If the engine drive belt needs to be replaced, see Group 01 of the Business Class M2 Workshop Manual. Belt Tension Inspection Engine drive belts on the Mercedes-Benz and Caterpillar engines have belt tensioners that automatically adjust the tension on the belt. These belts do not require adjustment. Caterpillar 3126 Engine Inspect the belt tensioner for unusual noise and excessive looseness or shaking of the pulley bearings. See Fig. 2. If the belt tensioner requires disassembly, refer to the engine service manual Engine Support Fastener Checking Front and rear engine supports for vehicles built from January 2007 require no periodic maintenance. Mounts should be inspected when the engine is removed for service. For vehicles manufactured prior to January 2007, perform the following check. 1. Check the tightness of the engine support fasteners at the rear of the engine. Tighten the fasteners 241 lbf ft (460 N m). 2. Check the tightness of the engine support fasteners at the front of the engine. Tighten the fasteners 136 lbf ft (327 N m). NOTE: When the engine is removed, inspect the lower and upper isolators for wear. Check the restriction indicator at the air cleaner or in the cab if the vehicle is equipped with a dashmounted restriction gauge. For instructions, see the Business Class M2 Driver s Manual. 2. If necessary, replace the air cleaner element. For air cleaner element replacement instructions, see Group 09 of the Business Class M2 Workshop Manual. 3. Inspect the air cleaner housing for cracks, leaks, or any other damage. Replace the adaptors if necessary. 2. Inspect the air intake line, oil supply and return lines, and coolant supply and return lines for tight connections. Tighten the connections and replace the lines if needed. 3. Check the cooling fins on the air compressor crankcase. Clean the fins if they are clogged with debris. Do not smoke when working around batteries. Put out all flames and remove any source of sparks or intense heat.

Make sure the battery compartment is completely vented before disconnecting or connecting the battery cables. Battery acid is extremely harmful if splashed in the eyes or on the skin. Always wear a face shield and protective clothing when working around batteries. Damaged, chafed, or kinked wiring can cause electrical short-circuits and lead to fires, causing property damage, injury, or death. Clean, inspect, and maintain wiring and connections carefully. 1. Check the tightness of the alternator bracket fasteners; tighten the fasteners as needed. For torque values, see Group 15 of the Business Class M2 Workshop Manual. 2. See Group 01 for belt tension specifications. Check the alternator drive belt tension, using a tension gauge at the belt s longest span. Some engines are equipped with more than one alternator belt; check all of them for correct tension. Adjust the belt tension if necessary. Engines equipped with a serpentine or poly-v belt have automatic belt tensioners, and do not require belt tension inspection. 3. Check that all electrical connections at the alternator and starter are clean. Clean and tighten all charging system electrical connections including the connections at the starter B terminal and ground terminal, and where the alternator charging cable terminates. Trace and inspect all wiring and cables connected to: Alternator Starter and depopulation studs Batteries Magnetic switch Cab Jump-start studs Battery isolation relays Battery shutoff switches 4. Check wires and cables for wear, chafing, kinks, discolored insulation, or loose clamps or ties. Find the cause of any problems and repair, replace, and reroute wires and clamps as necessary. 5. Check the alternator wiring for missing insulation, kinks, and heat damage. Replace or repair as needed. 6. On the bundled cable that runs from the batteries to the starter, ensure that tie straps are installed at least every 12 inches (300 mm).

If other than genuine Freightliner parts are used for replacement or repair of components affecting noise emission control, the owner should be sure that such parts are warranted by their manufacturer to be equivalent to genuine Freightliner parts in performance and durability. Freightliner Noise Emissions Warranty Refer to the vehicle owner s warranty information book for warranty information concerning noise emission control systems. Tampering With the Noise Control System is Prohibited Federal law prohibits the following acts or the causing thereof: 1. The removal or rendering inoperative by any person other than for purposes of maintenance, repair, or replacement, of any device or element of design incorporated into any new vehicle for the purpose of noise control prior to its sale or delivery to the ultimate purchaser or while it is in use, 2. The use of the vehicle after such device or element of design has been removed or rendered inoperative by any person. Among those acts presumed to constitute tampering are the acts listed below: 1. Removal of engine noise-deadening panels, including cab or hood liners. 2. Removal of or rendering inoperative the engine speed governor so as to allow engine speed to exceed the manufacturer s specifications. 3. Removal of or rendering inoperative the fan clutch, including bypassing the control on any thermostatic fan drive to cause it to operate continuously. 4. Removal of the fan shroud. 5. Removal of or rendering inoperative exhaust system components, including exhaust pipe clamping. 6. Removal of air intake system components. Use these torque values if either the bolt or nut is lubricated or plated (zinc-phosphate conversion-coated, cadmium-plated, or waxed). Male and female threads (bolt and nut) must both be unlubricated and unplated. If either is plated or lubricated, use Table 15. Freightliner recommends that all plated and unplated fasteners be coated with oil before installation.

Too much or too little tension on the belt may result in excessive or premature belt wear. Replace the engine drive belt if any conditions described under Visual Inspection are found. Visually inspect all drive belts, then perform the belt tension inspection. To inspect a belt, gently twist the belt to view the belt sidewalls and the underside of the belt. When replacing a matched set of belts, always replace both belts at the same time. Matched belts must be from the same manufacturer. Visual Inspection For examples of drive belt conditions, see Fig Inspect the belt for glazing. Shiny sidewalls are evidence of glazing, which is caused by friction created when a loose belt slips in the pulleys. It can also be caused by oil or grease contamination on the pulleys. 2. Check for tensile breaks or breaks in the cord body. Cuts in a belt are usually caused by foreign material in the pulley or by prying or forcing the belt during removal or installation. 3. Check the belt for ply separation. Oil, grease, or belt dressing can cause the belt to fall apart in layers. Repair any oil or coolant leaks that are affecting the belts before replacing the drive belts. Do not use belt dressing on any belt. 4. Check for uneven ribs on serpentine (poly-v) belts. Foreign material in the pulley will erode the undercord ribs causing the belt to lose its gripping power. 5. Check the belt for a jagged or streaked sidewall. Small, irregular cracks are usually indication of an old belt. 7. Visually inspect the pulleys for excessive play or wobble. Excessive play or wobble indicates a failure of the pulley bearing. Check for belt squealing or squeaking. Replace the bearings as necessary. NOTE: If it is difficult to distinguish the location of a supposed bearing noise, obtain a stethoscope and place it on the component being checked, not the pulley, to isolate the area from outside interference. 8. Inspect all pulleys for foreign material, oil, or grease in the grooves.

Replace any missing tie straps, and add tie straps where spacing between them exceeds 12 inches (300 mm). 7. Ensure that all cables have sufficient slack to allow for engine movement, and that there is no pressure on any wiring connectors. 8. If any convoluted tubing is damaged, check the wiring inside it. Replace any damaged or missing convoluted tubing. 9. Clean the cable connector terminals with a wire brush. See Group 54 of the Business Class M2 Workshop Manual for troubleshooting instructions, and for adjustment, repair, or replacement instructions. 9.1 Clean and tighten the battery ground cable, terminal, and clamps. 9.2 Inspect the retainer assembly (or battery hold-downs) and the battery box. Replace worn or damaged parts. Remove any corrosion with a wire brush, and wash with a weak solution of baking soda and water. Rinse with clean water and dry. To prevent rusting, paint the retainer assembly. 9.3 Check for and remove any foreign objects such as stones, bolts, or nuts, from the battery box. 9.4 After cleaning, connect the cables to the batteries, and tighten them to the torque specifications listed on the battery, generally 10 to 15 lbf ft (14 to 20 N m). Make sure the terminal connections are clean and tight.Group Title 00. General Information 01. Engine 09. Air Intake 13. Air Compressor 15. Alternator and Starter 20. It therefore provides a means of deciding whether a proposed method of operation would require a change to those rules and instructions, or whether the change is to internal company instructions or competence management systems. Changes to the Rule Book are set out in the Periodical Operating Notice, published every 3 months by Network Rail, which is available to train operators. More and more metro systems all over the world operate automatically up to the highest Grade of Automation (GoA4) of unattended train operation. In contrast, heavy rail operation is only at the beginning of Automatic Train Operation (ATO). The Czech railways have been operating with GoA2 semi-automatic train operation (STO) since 1991 and, in the UK, the Thameslink has been operating with STO over ETCS Level 2 since 2019, with plans to upgrade to GoA4. Mainline railways have been more active recently in implementing Driver Advisory Systems (DAS) to support drivers with manual train operation (GoA1). Clearly, heavy rail operates in more complex environments than metro systems, which makes autonomous operation way more challenging. In particular, mainline railways are typically characterised by a variety of train types and stop patterns, long distances in open environments, complex station layouts with many conflicting movements, and operation by multiple railway undertakings, including passenger and freight.

Even greater numbers of people are known to use it as a reference and information document both from the United Kingdom and abroad using the online version. It also generates by far the greatest number of queries via ourTo this end they work very closely with our colleagues in the. Human Factors team. The Operations team has also developed strong links with engineering disciplines both within RSSB, within the wider GB rail industry, and in Europe as part of its commitment to various EU-based rail organisations. This is used by all staff concerned with the acceptance, planning, handling, conveyance, marshalling, and movement of freight traffic. It comprises a set of modules and handbooks which contain direct instructions for railway staff. It sets out the operational rules for application on the GB mainline railway, which are necessary to enable the safe and timely delivery of people and goods to their destination and to provide the framework to enable safe engineering operations. This matrix lists the Rule Book modules, handbooks and information handbooks that should be issued to a person who is competent to carry out the duties of the job title or role shown in the list. These would apply across the main line network and manage safety across the interface between train operators and the infrastructure manager. Instead these contain background information on the topic covered, including instructions on the general operation of any equipment dealt with. Associated with the Rule Book are a number of Information Handbooks on: This document provides a link between nine fundamental operating principles and the rules and instructions in the Rule Book and Working Manual for Rail Staff. It indicates whether rules and instructions are defined for traffic operation and management on the main line railway, and the warning and protection arrangements for people who have to work on or near the line.

The ATO system then generates a suitable speed trajectory and tracks it within certain tolerance bounds, while also sending timing point predictions back to the TMS for traffic monitoring. In parallel, the TMS feeds the real-time traffic plan to the automatic route setting systems so that consistent Movement Authorities are generated and sent to the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) systems, which provide the ATO on-board algorithms with safety constraints. ON-TIME developed a prototype systems architecture integrating all the developed algorithms and demonstrated its working in a simulation environment. One main lesson was, however, that the railways had difficulties in providing detailed infrastructure data to feed the algorithms. In the meantime, several initiatives have started to standardise infrastructure data and facilitate digital data exchange, such as the UIC RailTopoModel, RailML and the specifications of ATO-over-ETCS. This is an essential step in the automation of railway operations. Also, automatic generation of contingency plans to handle disruptions is being adopted by the railways, such as in the Netherlands, which is a first step to automatic real-time rescheduling algorithms for disruption management. In the meantime, the market for DAS is getting more mature with a trend to go from stand-alone DAS with advice based on a pre-programmed timetable to Connected DAS (C-DAS) that can receive timetable updates from a centralized TMS. Simple ATO systems may consist of a cruise control where the cruise speed is predetermined by the timetable or may depend on the current delay. In the last decade, much research has been carried out on energy-efficient train driving. An energy-efficient speed trajectory makes optimal use of the running time supplements and track gradient profile by applying an optimal cruising speed, coasting regimes without traction and, possibly, regenerative braking.

Many railways experience an increasing transport demand, resulting in operation close to the infrastructure capacity limits. In such conditions, delays easily spread throughout the network. It is, therefore, of primary importance to avoid train delays and act effectively when they do occur. The main functions of ATO are accurate driving and accurate stopping, which implies better schedule adherence. As a result, the buffer time between trains can be reduced, allowing more trains on the network. The ATO algorithms, therefore, must be robust to daily variations and small disturbances. Nevertheless, it is unavoidable that schedule deviations will exceed the (small) buffer times once in a while, so ATO must receive up-to-date journey profiles to avoid conflicts. Therefore, ATO needs to be connected to a Traffic Management System (TMS) that monitors the train movements and is capable of conflict detection and resolution to maintain overall conflict-free timetables for conflict-free following, merging and crossing. In general, train operation is part of a railway traffic system with many interactions and feedback loops. The EU project ON-TIME investigated what is needed to implement algorithms for automated timetabling, traffic management and connected DAS. The project ran between 2011 and 2014. At that time, ATO for heavy rail was still unthinkable and the focus was on DAS, but the developed principles of centrally guided train operation also apply to ATO. Automated railway operations should start with a conflict-free timetable computed at a microscopic level with drivable speed profiles. This timetable is the basis of a real-time traffic plan at route level maintained by a TMS equipped with automatic conflict detection and resolution algorithms. The TMS provides the ATO subsystems with up-to-date journey profiles with target times at timing points.

For unattended train operation (GoA4), the train may be remotely controlled from a traffic control centre in case of disruptions. GoA2 may be the highest achievable in open environments that restrict automatic obstacle detection. Other automation tasks are automatic turning and automatic shunting. These driving tasks apply typically to empty trains running at low speeds so that unattended train operation is feasible. The recent Shift2Rail project, RAILS, is dedicated to investigating the potential of AI and develop a roadmap for AI integration in the railways. An important concept will be Explainable AI so that solutions can be understood by drivers and train controllers, as opposed to black box solutions. This is, at least, essential for GoA1 and GoA2, as argued above. The potential of this concept is explored in the Shift2Rail project, MOVINGRAIL. Before such concepts can be realised, the railways will first take up advanced C-DAS and develop ATO GoA2, and then develop full automation on dedicated lines. It can be expected that the future heavy rail landscape will show a mixture of grades of automation, depending on the specifics of the railways. He has an MSc in Mathematics from Utrecht University (1993), a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) in Mathematical Modelling and Decision Support from Delft University of Technology (1996), and a PhD in Railway Transport from Delft University of Technology (2005). He has more than 20 years of research experience in the planning, control and management of railway transport. He is the coordinator of the Shift2Rail project MOVINGRAIL, participates in the Shift2Rail project RAILS, and led the Work Package on railway timetabling in the EU project ON-TIME.For example, in the Czech Republic, we have ATO in GoA2 in operation for almost 30 years (since 1991).Lately I also commented on ideas of Eelco Schrik (Mott McDonald). I am currently involved in the European project FENIX.

Advanced DAS and ATO speed trajectory algorithms compute the optimal switching points between successive driving regimes of acceleration, cruising, coasting and braking, depending on the timetable, current delay and the train and track characteristics. When trains operate fixed routes, the speed trajectories can be precomputed and stored on-board for online use. However, on mainline railways, trains may be rerouted or retimed, which requires a more flexible online computation of speed trajectories, depending on the current conditions. The future generation of C-DAS and ATO algorithms will thus contain online speed trajectory computations that can quickly adapt to changing conditions in interaction with a TMS. In GoA1, the train driver operates the train manually, supervised by the ATP and possibly supported by a DAS. While, in GoA2, the ATO directly commands the traction and braking controls after the departure command by the driver. The speed trajectory calculations may be the same, although manual driving may require restrictions on the amount of driver actions. In that sense, GoA2 means less workload, since the driving tasks are automated, although the driver may need to take over in case of failures or environmental conditions that the ATO system is not aware of. For DAS, a driver action needs to be announced well in advance so that the driver is prepared. Moreover, context information must be given so that the driver understands the advice and acts to it. Also, for GoA2 context, information must be given so that the driver understands what the ATO system is doing. This situational awareness is needed for the driver to carry out a supervisory role and be able to take over when needed. For driverless train operation (GoA3), automatic obstacle detection is required to automatically stop the train in dangerous situations, while staff in the train can still take over the driving in disruptive conditions.

In order to handle the growing flows in freight transportation, we offer intelligent operations control systems which simplify operations and improve the usage of existing capacities by making full use of all reserves and also enable a high level of efficiency and quality of rail transportation, even in exceptional operating situations. It allows flexible reactions on volatile request from service facilities and communicates with external systems such as announcement or train running information systems or accounting systems. Intelligent interface management and early visualization of conflicts reduces wrong decisions, simplifies administrative and manual activities and increases quality and efficiency of operations. But what happened that year for the freight rail industry left an indelible mark in history and is still surprisingly relevant today: Congress passed the Staggers Rail Act, which laid the foundation for our country’s modern freight rail network. Railroads are evolving, providing customers a competitive edge in the global economy of the future. Explore more to see why one event in 1980 still matters today and what it means for the future of freight railroads and our country. Founded in 1934, AAR is the world’s leading railroad policy, research, standard setting, and technology organization that focuses on the safety and productivity of the U.S. freight rail industry. AAR Full members include the major freight railroads in the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as Amtrak. Affiliates and Associates include non-Class I and commuter railroads, rail supply companies, engineering firms, signal and communications firms, and rail car owners. The difference between the American term railroad and the international term railway (used by the International Union of Railways and English-speaking countries outside the United States) is the most significant difference in rail terminology. There are also others, due to the parallel development of rail transport systems in different parts of the world.Instead, an alarm is sounded at a preset interval in which the operator must respond by pressing a button to reset the alarm and timer if no other controls are operated. The only significant difference is the size, measured in feet rather than inches. The fireman remains with the locomotive and, when the driver is at the other end, the fireman controls the cut off and vacuum ejectors in addition to his usual duties. See also: Push-pull train.

In freight rail, resource management may also include cargo routes as well as terminals and loading and unloading facilities. Siemens offers a number of integrated hardware and software systems that provide and consolidate the information needed for optimum planning and dispatching. We are here to help.

Revolving masses can easily be balanced by counterweights, but the balancing of reciprocating parts is a matter of compromise and judgement. Early locomotives burned coke; provision of a brick arch was necessary before coal could be used without producing excessive smoke. The best known example is the Southern Pacific Railroad 's AC type, built to handle drag freights through the SP's many tunnels and snow sheds without the danger of the exhaust asphyxiating the engine crew. Commonly referred to as a B unit or a Slug, although not all Slugs are cabless. Also known as master and slave. See also: Reverser handle. See also embankment. It is intended to stop a train if the driver is incapacitated. In some forms, this device may be pedal-actuated. See also Dead-man's vigilance device. Known as a torpedo in the United States. Such units, especially those consisting of a single vehicle, are sometimes termed railcars. The power distribution alleviates stress on the couplers and relieves the lead units of the full weight of the train, making it easier to move on grades. Currently, double heading (and occasionally triple heading) are used primarily by large passenger trains or as a show for railfans. Also called 'pot' or 'jack'. Steam passing through a cone sucks air from the train pipe to create the vacuum. EMD was previously Electro-Motive Division of General Motors before being sold. See also cutting. They usually run between sidings and main stations, with the carriages then forming a service train to another destination. This data is used to evaluate incidents and accidents. Typical stored data includes speed, brake pressure, dynamic brake, horn activation, track signal, etc. In the U.S., event recorders are mandated by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) for freight, passenger and commuter rail. Regulations for railroad outside the U.S. vary by country. Transit operations are not generally required to have event recorders, but have begun to add them voluntarily.

If the water level gets too low the core melts and the noise of the escaping steam warns the enginemen. Cars joined with Jacobs bogies are semi-permanently joined in an articulated configuration. A weight-saving feature used on lightweight passenger trains. Commonly practiced in bowl or hump yards to make up or break down trains or classify large numbers of cars in an expedient fashion.Extremely hazardous to the brakemen of its day, it was outlawed in the United States by the Railroad Safety Appliance Act of 1893. Functionally replaced by ditch lights on modern locomotives. The sub-classes of this type of vehicle; Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU), Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) and Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) are more common terms. These may also be termed railcars. A permissive signal is identified by the presence of a number plate affixed to the mast or supporting structure.Various types of porter include:For the duration of the work, a person in charge of possession (PICOP) has control of the line.A heavier rail can carry heavier loads with less distortion and less damage to the rails themselves and the roadbed. See also: Auto train. There are many rail profiles, often specific to individual railroads. Rails must be periodically scanned electronically, the data inspected and analysed, then re-profiled with rail grinding machines to maintain the safe and proper rail profile. Rails that cannot be brought back to the proper rail profile are condemned and replaced. See also Cut off. The train runs across the track. The container holds sand, which a crew can drop onto the rail to improve rail adhesion under wet, steep, or slippery rail conditions. The sandbox and operating mechanism are collectively known as sanding gear. Sidings are often used for storing rolling stock or freight. A siding is also used as a form of rail access for warehouses and other businesses, where the siding often meets up with loading docks at rail car height. In the U.S.

the term also covers the British term loop. Also, a passing track in the U.S. Slow orders can be imposed on a temporary basis to protect, for example, maintenance of way employees while sections of track are under repair. Widely used in areas where track is substandard and in need of repair. Supports the stack; steam pipes to and from the cylinders pass through here; contains the blastpipe where the exhaust steam is used to provide draft for the fire. In superheated locomotives, also contains the superheater header and (optionally) a front-end throttle. Not to be confused with the blower used to scavenge the cylinders of a naturally aspirated two-stroke Diesel engine. This is accomplished by measuring angles and distances based on the principles of triangulation. Also known as the transition spiral and spiral easement. The coupler can be a purely mechanical device such as a screw coupler or bar coupler. It is powered by a vacuum from the locomotive but the application is actually by atmospheric pressure when the vacuum is released. Now largely superseded by the air brake. The water tank is mounted between the frame plates, beneath the cab and boiler. Wheels are cast or forged (wrought) and are heat treated to have a specific hardness. New wheels are trued to a specific profile before being pressed onto an axle. All wheel profiles must be periodically monitored to insure proper wheel to rail interface. Improperly trued wheels increase rolling resistance, reduce energy efficiency and may create unsafe operation. A railroad wheel typically consists of two main parts: the wheel itself, and the tire around the outside. A railway tire is itself steel, and is typically heated and pressed onto the wheel, where it remains firmly as it shrinks and cools. It is a major source of derailments. The angle between the wheel tread and flange is often specific to the rail to prevent wheel climb and possible derailments.

The term is used in connection with the design and management of their interaction. Wheel slip was common with steam engines as they started to move due to the excessive torque often generated at low speed. The job was associated with the steam age, but they still operate in some eastern European countries. Modern planned maintenance procedures have mostly obviated the need for the wheel-tapper. See train whistle for a description of the whistle code used to communicate. Also a nickname for an air horn on a diesel locomotive. Steam engine whistles were historically known as chimes in the US during the 19th century. It is the point at which the engineer should begin sounding the whistle or horn. Third are the trailing idler wheels, usually to provide support to larger fireboxes. Articulated locomotives are similarly described. The numbers include the wheels on both sides of the engine, so a 2-8-2 engine would have one idler, four drivers, and a final idler on each side of the engine. The disc normally hangs straight down, but an approaching train sets it swinging from side to side, the red light illuminates or flashes, and a bell rings. The interior received minor revisions as well, and chassis fairings were improved for greater fuel efficiency. This model was marketed as the Argosy Evolution. While retaining the basic cab structure of the previous generation, the second-generation Argosy shifts its design influence from the Century Class to its replacement, the Cascadia. Continuing to use the original doors also shared with the Century Class, Columbia, and Coronado, the second-generation Argosy adopted a similar dashboard configuration as the Cascadia; in place of the two-piece grille derived from the Century Class, the Argosy received its own single-piece grille (loosely previewing the 2018 Cascadia). Anyone who remembers being wedged into the left seat of an early Argosy will be especially grateful. Despite sitting on top of the 15-litre inline six cylinder there is no heat or smell in the cab, and engine noise is literally a dull roar from somewhere below and behind. It was only on the steeper ascents up to Leongatha that it made its presence known. The hill start holds the brakes while the clutch engages, eliminating roll-backs and reducing driveline stress from over-revving on take-off.

Combined with the disc brake of the Argosy, it means emergency braking situations can be handled confidently. Although muffled by the improved noise proofing it is still clearly audible in the cabin, but not to the extent of older models. Stay safe on short ot long trips in freezing weather. freight forwarding operations manual

Instead, professional freight forwarders act as third-party intermediaries between producers and carriers, ensuring a producer’s goods get where they need to be, when they need to be there. They also take care of the considerable import and export logistics that go with ground, rail, sea or air distance shipping — including documentation, regulatory compliance, insurance, carrier billings and much more. And unlike the broader logistics and supply chain management industries, freight forward is only concerned with the couriering of physical commercial goods. They consider every point along the entire distribution route, selecting appropriate land, air and sea carriers offering the best prices at the most efficient delivery timetable. Their knowledge of carrier networks primes them to find the best deals through contract negotiations, load consolidation strategies, bulk shipment deals and much more, all cutting down your freight charge expenditures. Professional freight forwarders offer guaranteed arrival times in their service contracts, consolidate your goods into single loads of transport whenever possible and monitor every stop along a route until your merchandise reaches its endpoints. These are significant, with many manufacturers choosing to outsource this aspect of transportation logistics from an economical perspective as well as for their peace of mind. Crate-packing strategies ensure merchandise is padded and secured while still configured for optimal spatial usage. Shipped cargo also gets properly labeled and itemized according to import and export packing lists. Most do not own the storage warehouses used across transit, relying instead on existing warehousing networks and partnerships. They compile the necessary booking documents alongside contract management of carrier reservations. In the event of an accident, it is also the freight forwarding company who files and manages insurance claims.

In this beginner’s guide to freight forwarding, we’re breaking down what professional freight forwarding is, how freight forwarding companies work, how to go about choosing a freight forwarder for your merchandise movements, delivering better solutions and much more. Professional freight forwarders are the individuals or companies helming these end-to-end transportation and delivery services, handling the significant logistics, insurance and compliance concerns that come with long-distance cargo freighting.

Getting those products there, however, can be a different story. They manage the logistics of customs regulations, port controls, paperwork, licensing and inventory inspections, which are formidable undertakings and can take years of field experience to properly navigate. In today’s ever-competitive manufacturing marketplace, the shipping discounts alone make freight forwarding services a game-changer for commercial goods manufacturers, even after factoring in forwarder’s rates. What’s more, expert freight forwarders offer additional services like cargo consolidation consulting and methods of international payment management. As a result, businesses can see per-unit fixed costs of production run decrease — all while expanding market reach. From one convenient vendor, your business has a cargo partner offering guidance and administration into end-to-end cargo long-distance imports and export operations, including: Businesses protect their goods as well as their reputation with the services of a good freight forwarder. What about a subsector of the manufacturing industry, such as textiles, plastics or apparel. What about international market specialization, which could be particularly beneficial if your business is entering into a new country. Many freight forwarders will focus on one of these categories, either cargo, industry or market. Identify freight forwarders who fit your exact market niche or merchandise shipping needs. Other forwarders outsource all storage and warehousing to their network of partners to maximize their asset expenses and use. Depending on your distribution routes, a freight forwarder with regional warehouses may be more attractive than those without. These location-specific agents provide country-specific import and export expertise, as well as represent your freight forwarding partner to customs. It’s imperative for a freight forwarding service to have connections in the appropriate markets you wish to import or export your goods.

Cargo insurance can be a complex and time-consuming domain for businesses to manage internally, particularly once international shipping operations — and the subsequent customs, inspections, taxes, licenses and more — come into the picture. In particular, merchandise producers and manufacturers whose products demand international shipping benefit greatly from working with a freight forwarder, as that forwarder handles the vast network of shipping carriers and vendors necessary to get items to their final destination. The role of the freight forwarder is to step in and act as a simplifying mediator, managing the complete shipment of your cargo across multiple transportation carriers, customs officials and handlers. These distribution warehouses may or may not be owned by the freight forwarder themselves, depending on initial transportation distance. Overall, the export haulage stage is typically still domestic, involving truck or train merchandise transport. This step triggers proper packaging, itemizing and labeling activities, as well as early-stage documentation of import and export lists, plus any extra cargo insurance coverage. Now, cargo will get packaged and prepared for domestic or extended international transport. Freight forwarders procure the necessary certificates of origin for this clearance after submitting cargo-detailing paperwork to customs agents. They can then move onto negotiating carrier reservations and final contracts. Local customs agents inspect physical cargo as well as cargo documentation. Approved merchandise can legally get transported off ports and through smaller, regional distribution networks. It is the final stage of the freight forwarding process and signals the completion of a successful extended freight shipment. Rather than take on transportation vendor management alone, a freight forwarder vets your burgeoning transportation carriers, makes bookings and handles billings, all so you can concentrate on scaling up quality outputs.

Many suppliers offer to arrange the shipment as far as the port in the US. If you only add on local trucking costs, it seems like a great deal. But there are other costs involved. This shipping arrangement usually uses one of the “C” incoterms, especially the CIF incoterm. These incoterms have several flaws for an importer including a common scenario where the importer is held hostage to inflated costs. 4. You Engage A Freight Forwarder To Arrange The Shipment From Either The Factory Or Foreign Port If the idea of wading through four different options seems like too much information, that’s precisely why you should be letting a freight forwarder manage the shipment. You need a partner to take care of it for you. That partner is your international freight forwarder. Return to top Requesting A Quote Have your goods and ready to ship. Time to get a freight quote. Following this quick list to make sure you’re taking a good look at all your options. Depending on your forwarder you email or speak to, they may not remember to ask for all the data upfront. Which slows down their turnaround to give you a quote. Beat them to the punch by coming to the table with the following information: Contact Details Make sure that you have the full addresses for pickup if the shipment is door to door, including postcode (go back to Alibaba if necessary for this), and full destination address. Zip codes are sometimes enough but the more information, the better. You may need to provide the name of the port of origin. All airports and seaports have an international code (e.g USLAX for United States, Los Angeles airport if it is port to port or port to door (surprisingly, one of the largest forwarders asks for this for door to door too). If someone other than your company is receiving the shipment, have their contact details ready too. Weights And Measures Provide the total weight of the shipment.

You can probably still get by in pounds, but suppliers and increasingly forwarders think in kilograms. You can get this information from the packing list. If your shipment includes a mix of boxes, pallets, etc, you will need to itemize how many of each type. You will have to provide total cubic volume, also called “CBM”. Use this simple cubic meter calculator. If there is a Total Volume field on a wizard type form, you will probably need to round to the nearest whole number. ACTUAL WEIGHT VS DIMENSIONAL WEIGHT This isn’t something extra that you should prepare before requesting a quote, but it’s better to find about this now than when you call to query why you have been quoted for the “wrong” weight. Shipments that are comparatively light for their volume are often uneconomical for carriers to ship. The freight industry came up with a formula to charge light shipments at a profitable weight based on the shipment’s volume. This deemed weight is called the dimensional or volumetric weight. Use this chargeable weight calculator to see what wish weight your shipment will be quoted at. The official product name and code should be on the commercial invoice but it’s best to check anyway, using an HS Code lookup tool. It pays to check this because an uncorrected error could lead to delays in customs clearance later on. Businesses exporting shipments need to know the Schedule B code, although the same large forwarder that asks for port of origin for door to door shipment also asks for the Schedule B code for imports to the US as well. Return to top Freight Forwarding Companies and Solutions Maybe you know everything about your business, the best tools, even the latest in consumer shopping habits. But chances are, you get blindsided by freight. There’s a lot of that going around. You need a trusted ally in the freight industry, an agent working on your behalf. There are probably over 100,000 freight forwarding companies worldwide. That seems like being spoiled for choice.

Do I Need a Freight Forwarder. Requesting a Quote Freight Forwarding Companies and Solutions What is Freight Forwarding. Freight forwarding is the service most shippers use to arrange freight shipments. Freight forwarders are the experts who understand how the end to end shipping process works. Think of them as travel agents for freight. Freight forwarders come in many shapes and sizes. Some of the smaller forwarders are essentially trucking companies or trucking brokers and are not involved in international freight forwarding. Some specialize as ocean freight forwarders or as air freight forwarders. Small freight forwarders typically limited their reach to a few popular countries where they have a working relationship with a local freight forwarder. At the far end of the scale, the larger freight forwarders are essentially global freight forwarders. Return to top Freight Forwarding Services: What Do Freight Forwarders Do. When it comes to the shipment, here’s a shortlist of the service that freight forwarders provide: Freight forwarders prepare all the paperwork, make the bookings, and arrange payments required for each sector of the shipment that they are responsible for. They act on your behalf with numerous other parties involved in the shipment, air cargo carriers, any other freight forwarders involved in the shipment, and trucking companies. Most freight forwarders provide a customs brokerage service, that is they are both a clearing and forwarding agent and may act on your behalf with customs agents. If something goes wrong or is at risk of going wrong, freight forwarders step in and troubleshoot.

When it comes to working with you, the freight forwarder customer, here’s the service you should expect: When you first make a booking with a freight forwarder, they will explain what you need to know, for instance on key freight documents and on how the shipment will progress, They are the experts, and can inform you on anything else that you’d like to know, about freight. Where required, they will discuss options and give advice. As the shipment progresses, freight forwarders should keep you informed, especially if at any point, the shipment faces a significant risk of delay. Return to top Need an instant freight quote. The extent to which you can get by with or without a freight forwarder can be broken down into the four following scenarios. 1. Going It Alone Without A Freight Forwarder Much fewer people use travel agents these days, so why not skip the middleman and arrange the shipment yourself, or with just the help of a customs broker. This is where the analogy with travel agents breaks down. For most shipments, it simply isn’t possible to arrange international freight online with ocean or sea carriers. And even if it was possible to do without a freight forwarder, it is a risky game for non-specialists to play. A lot of things can go wrong in freight, and they often do. You need to cover your bases with freight insurance. 2. Your Supplier’s Freight Forwarder Arranges The Entire Shipment Your supplier may be an expert in manufacturing or trading, but they will not be freight experts. If they have an arrangement with a local freight forwarder who can manage an entire international freight shipment, it is unlikely to be that much better a deal than you can arrange. When it comes down to it, the supplier will be looking to recoup their costs. If they on-cost the freight charges, they have little incentive to secure a good rate. That means you will probably be paying inflated freight charges.

However, that’s often not the case for an industry often described as being opaque, meaning customers get little visibility into pricing and service levels. Here’s how to choose a good freight forwarding company: First, consider whether your shipments have special requirements. Then weigh how much your shipping might narrow down forwarder selection. What to look out for if you are driven by price. What to look out for if service is more important to you than price. And finally, how to search for both great service and a good price. Consider Whether Your Shipments Need Specialized Support There are some commodities which many forwarders don’t deal with, such as vehicles, household removals, and bulk commodities like wheat. Not all forwarders deal with oversized shipments, either, so you’ll definitely need a large or specialized forwarder if you want to ship a full subway train. A more common group of exceptions that many smaller forwarders won’t deal with is hazardous cargo. Don’t be fooled by the name, as it includes some seemingly tame products, like toys with batteries. Another important consideration is geographic coverage. Not all forwarders ship to all parts of the world. Smaller freight forwarding companies often have a quite limited network of forwarding companies in other countries that can act as agents for local delivery or pickup and customs clearance. They’re bound to cover your country’s most common trading partners, but if you import, say, from Bhutan as well as China, you should clear this first with a prospective new forwarder. Considerations for Working with Global Freight Forwarding Companies Working with name-brand global forwarders has its advantages. They have the muscle to secure good rates and preferential treatment from the big air and ocean carriers. But being popular means that the larger forwarders have to make choices.

Their larger customers bring in more business, and it’s only natural that in busy periods, larger customers will get preferential treatment to the detriment of smaller customers. Here’s the type of service, smaller businesses can expect. Only 35% of large forwarders responded to a small business’s quote request in a recent mystery shopping survey. Let’s face it, you need to be able to rely on contacting your freight forwarder when necessary. If your primary point of contact is going to be a 1-800 number, that’s an indication of how valued your business is to them. Of course, the reverse is also true. Although local forwarders can usually give their small customers more width and are faster to respond, they may not be as competitive on price. This is something to consider should your strategy be to go for the cheapest price. Are You Looking First And Foremost For A Great Price. Most forwarders will claim to provide superior service, but they are all aware that winning a new customer generally comes down to price. However, making a decision on price alone can be deceiving. For instance, some forwarders discount the first shipment to win the sale but make up for it with on subsequent shipments. Also, some forwarders hide charges in the terms and conditions to make their quote price look more attractive than those from more honest competitors. There are of course forwarders who lead on price. That almost certainly means a reduction in service. But, be aware, some forwarders cut back on general customer service levels. Many things can and do go wrong in international shipments. That cheap price may come back to bite you. If you get a quote that is significantly cheaper than other requested quotes, see if you can find out how they were able to undercut their competitors. Or Is The Freight Forwarding Company’s Service More Important. That’s why you’ll need a reliable freight forwarder you can trust to handle your valued goods.

The stories you’ve heard about the number of containers lost at sea are urban myths. In fact, only a very small percentage of containers go missing each year. Much more commonly, shipments do get lost, stolen, damaged and delayed. If this seems to happen frequently with your shipments, it’s time to start looking for a more reliable forwarder. Many larger forwarders are also 3PLs (third party logistics providers) who specialize in providing broader support (contract logistics) for their customers. They can provide useful services for importers, like superior shipment tracking and warehousing, and ultimately reliable freight forwarding. The tradeoff, of course, is likely to be on price. But service isn’t just about breadth it’s also about quality. Freight forwarding takes a lot of coordinating. Airlines, ocean carriers and especially customs agents aren’t forgiving of incorrect, incomplete or late paperwork. If your forwarder isn’t on top of your shipment, it risks being delayed and incurring unnecessary additional charges. As a logistics service provider, your forwarder should communicate regularly and transparently with you. If you wait a week to get a freight quote before shipping, that might be a good indication that you could be waiting to get status updates on delayed cargo. A reliable forwarder will provide status updates, quickly alert you of any problem, and just as quickly work to resolve them, for instance, if a glitch occurs at customs or the warehouse, or when a shipment is behind schedule. If this isn’t happening, then it’s time to start looking for a new freight forwarder. Good communication is important with freight charges as well. Freight quotes shouldn’t require deciphering. Reliable freight forwarders should not have hidden charges or include unfair terms and conditions that get the forwarder off the hook. EXPERT TIP A great partnership requires each partner knowing what is required of the other.

Soon after selecting a new forwarder, meet up with them to discuss what you both expect in the way of communication and. Your forwarder needs you to quickly be on top of any documentation they send your way. You’ll probably want to know more about the process, the key documents required, at what points along the shipment you will get updates. You’ll want to agree on what point you wish to be notified of potential problems. This way, you can ensure you get better freight service. The digital forwarder is a new breed worth considering. They compete for smaller importers by providing a better service. They can do this because process automation enables them to run a leaner business, it reduces errors and speeds up internal processes. The integrated customer interfaces deliver a superior user experience. There are few of them still, and they are still building capability. In particular, not everything is automated yet, and they are still building up their geographic coverage. Until now, freight forwarding has largely been offline. Getting prices from forwarders generally takes days. You’re not going to get a schedule of rates, only a response to a specific quote request. It can be difficult, too, working out just how competitive your freight forwarder is on service. Often, the only way to find out is by personal experience because there hasn’t been anything in the way of online forwarder ratings. With importers having little visibility into pricing or service, it’s not surprising that many of them are paying through the nose for an inferior service. But this is changing. The Freightos Marketplace, which supplies instant online quoting from a wide range of forwarders, also provides price and service comparison. That is, it is now possible to sort and select quotes by price, transit time, or service rating. The last article in this goes into the process of selecting a forwarder and quote in more detail.

This is what it boils down to when looking for the right forwarder for your business. First, consider whether you have any unusual shipping needs. That will weed out some of the smaller forwarders. Then consider how important your business may be to the freight forwarding company. What you consider next depends whether you are driven most by price or service. Finally, there is now an option that lets you go for both service and price.
